When he began painting in the 1950s, Roy De Forest worked with abstract expressionist imagery. As his style evolved, his pieces became more representational and included suggestions of cartographic traces and human figures. His mature style was fully realized in the late 1960s as he mixed the previous abstract patterns with recognizable animal and architectural forms. De Forest’s figurative paintings reflected of his dreams and personal relationship with his environment. De Forest was key in the development of “Nut Art,” an art making approach that emphasized humorous illustrations of personalized mythical worlds. His work is regionally, stylistically, and conceptually intertwined with California and its unique art scene.
