Thomas Struth’s large-scale color photograph entitled Milan Cathedral (Façade), closes in on the street-front portal of this grand historic site. Construction for the Cathedral began in 1386, but it took almost six centuries to complete, finishing in 1965. The monumental scale of the chromogenic color print expresses this vast expanse of history. From 1386, the Cathedral has been witness to millions of bystanders. In his portrayal of the cathedral, Struth captures a daily scene on the front steps leading up the entryway, and offers a glimpse of the walkers, tourists, and bystanders who are dwarfed by the scale of the structure, as well as the history it embodies.
