Artist Joel Sternfeld has returned to this site on many occasions since 1978 when he first encountered it while traveling to photograph the country. The location is a field from the 1836 painting by Thomas Cole entitled “View from Mount Holyoke, North Hampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm (Oxbow),” an iconic masterpiece of American landscape painting juxtaposing the pastoral idyll of neatly farmed plots with the sublime power of the untamed wooded wilderness. In Sternfeld’s view seen here, muddied ice stretches widely beneath a crisp, almost colorless blanket of snow that spreads evenly over the flat agricultural field, anchoring the stiff remnants of corn and potato plants that once grew there, and locking the barren forest on the horizon into the fragile earth. At first look, there is nothing remarkable about this landscape except for its desolation, but Sternfeld invites us to contemplate the emptiness as visual poetry, which emerges quietly through the subtle horizontal bands of alternating steel and rusty grey tones, evoking the numbing cold and constant stillness of late winter’s doldrums. As a pioneer in color photography in the 1970s, and trained in the color theory of Josef Albers and Johannes Itten, Sternfeld is known for his sensitivity to the visual qualities of his subject matter, which he represents in large-format photographs to convey emotional subtleties with either intimacy or grandeur. Known for his photographic series of people and landscapes, Sternfeld also uses his camera to gradually reveal his point of view about a subject. This photograph of the East Meadows is part of the artist’s meditation on Cole’s 19th-century representation of agriculture and the primeval forest, which could be read as a premonitory statement about human intervention into nature. April gently cradles Sarah on her lap, mimicking the depiction of the Madonna and Child in Italian Renaissance paintings. In Christianity, the Virgin Mary is the pinnacle of white womanhood, the ideal mother. Beckett’s representation of a black Muslim woman in this pose complicates the concept of the Madonna. Beckett’s new envisioning of the Madonna calls attention to the double standard of the veil, in which the niqab worn by April and other Muslim women is viewed from a Western perspective as oppressive, whereas the Virgin Mary’s blue veil is celebrated by Christians as a sign of modesty and purity. The opposition between Christianity and Islam is a current that runs deeply throughout history, most infamously with violent confrontation in the medieval Crusades and more contemporarily in the prevalent stereotyping of Muslims as terrorists based on a few extremist sects. His work sets out to reach deeper than Havana’s decaying buildings and old cars which have become so iconic to foreign eyes, and into the many joys and difficulties of contemporary daily life for Cubans. Though he began photographing with black and white film, Chang Castán later transitioned to digital, experimenting with color [1] to capture scenes such as </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic">Untitled (Turkeys)</SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-family:'Helvetica'">. Due to a lack of color materials and technology, photography in Cuba has been largely black and white until recently [2]. These limitations have undoubtedly influenced photographic style in Cuba, and Chang Castán continues to work mostly in black and white, using color only when an image begs to be captured in color.<BR/><BR/>The multicolored wall and the warmth of the sunlight are important expressions of color in this photograph. As well as giving the viewer a sense of the setting and time of day, the use of color in </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic">Untitled (Turkeys) </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-family:'Helvetica'"> highlights some of the more subtle actions occurring in the scene, such as the child upside-down against the wall. Despite the human presence in this scene, the turkeys are the photographer’s subject; the sunlight streams onto the turkeys in the foreground while the children are in the shadows in the background. As much of his work focuses on life in Havana as both beautiful and trying, his work in this series seeks to understand and portray the complexities of daily life in the rural parts of the island. </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic">Baralon </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-family:'Helvetica'">is a depiction of childhood in rural Cuba. Two children stand in the sea with a large abandoned boat in the background, looking up at the viewer with their arms around each other. The children’s confidence in front of the boat tells the viewer that this is an object they have known for some time. Their stance and stoic expressions seem to be tugged at by innocence and playfulness as they present their boat to a guest. As with the other photographs in the </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic">Campo </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-family:'Helvetica'">series, the photographer documents humans in nature.
